The tree of knowledge, connecting heaven and the underworld, and the tree of life, connecting all forms of creation, are both forms of the world tree or cosmic tree. According to the elders, the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, are the same tree.
The Birth FIR
Parents and relatives carved the new-born's name into a FIR in the forest that would become the tree spiritual brother. For every anversary they would bring offers and prayers to the tree, until the newborn would grow enough to do this by himself. Not taking care of the tree spiritual brother meant not taking care of their person.
The Judgement FIR
It was considered the divine judge. Taking an oath in front of the fir would seal it in time. The ones accused of crimes would be tied to a fir in the forest and left there for 3 days and 3 nights. If the person was still alive and not killed by forest creatures or the powers of nature, was freed beliveing that the Fir has judged him.
The Wedding FIR
The groom and bride would take oath in front of a fir, instead of a priest.
The Funeral FIR
The Harvest FIR
t the death of an young person a fir would be planted on the grave, sometimes the very one that was carved with the name of birth. If a member of the family died far away from home, a fir trunk would be buried instead.
It was believed that if a fir was planted into an orchard or on a crops field that would bring good harvest to that place.
